This weekend welcomes one of the year’s biggest sporting events, the Super Bowl. The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will play in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, Louisiana. The game is a rematch of Super Bowl LVII, which saw the Chiefs defeat the Eagles by a score of 38-35. The Replacements (2000)

A coach cheers a his quarterback stands bheind him in The Replacements.
Warner Bros. Pictures

Everyone likes a good redemption story. For the players in The Replacements, this is their shot at becoming football heroes. Due to a players’ strike, the Washington Sentinels are left without a team. The Sentinels must win three of their final four games to make the postseason. Sentinels owner Edward O’Neil (Jack Warden) hires former coach Jimmy McGinty (Gene Hackman) to lead a team of replacement players for the rest of the season.

McGinty accepts the deal and forms the team his way. The centerpiece of the new squad is quarterback Shane Falco (Keanu Reeves), a former All-American whose career went downhill after choking in a big game. With Falco as the leader, McGinty fills in the rest of the squad with rejects and no-names. However, the team eventually comes together and bonds over their shared disappointments. Who knows? Maybe a team of bench guys can become legends.

The Waterboy (1998)

The Waterboy (1998) Trailer | Adam Sandler | Kathy Bates

Remember the time Bobby Boucher showed up at halftime and the Mud Dogs won the Bourbon Bowl? Well, we do! Adam Sandler created the most unorthodox linebacker in The Waterboy, one of the Sandman’s best 1990s comedies. Bobby Boucher Jr. (Sandler) has been raised to love and obey one thing: his overprotective mother, Helen (Kathy Bates).

In his free time, the 31-year-old Bobby is the water boy for the struggling South Central Louisiana State University Mud Dogs, led by the depressed Coach Klein (Henry Winkler). After being teased by the team’s quarterback, Bobby knocks him out in a fit of rage. Impressed by his aggression, Coach Klein adds Bobby to the team as a linebacker. With Bobby as the defensive anchor, South Central becomes a winning program. Yet the only thing standing in the way of a championship could be Bobby’s mama and her distaste for football.

My All American (2015)

A man in a suit talks to a kid in a white shirt in My All American.
Clarius Entertainment

Everything is bigger in Texas, including football. The Texas Longhorns rose to prominence in the 1960s behind coach Darrell Royal (Aaron Eckhart). Freddie Steinmark, a former player for Royal, serves as the inspiration for My All American. Despite his small stature, Steinmark (Finn Wittrock) gets a chance to play for Royal (Aaron Eckhart) in the late 1960s.

Freddie works his way up to the varsity and finds success on defense. Just as Freddie finds his way on the team, he begins experiencing pain in his knee. Freddie’s injury takes a tragic turn during the 1968 season and prevents him from playing. However, Freddie’s story inspires the team ahead of the 1969 Cotton Bowl Classic. My All American is a tribute to Steinmark, the ultimate teammate.
